A Study on Personality Development through Performing Arts

Abstract

Performing Arts is a form of arts practice that involves a person or persons undertaking an action or actions within a particular timeframe in a particular space or location for an audience. The knowledge and practice of these art forms help in the development of one’s personality. This is a two years sponsored project by University Grants Commission. The project has intended to study and analyze the impact of performing arts among the college students. From the whole project a glimpse of information has been presented here with the question that what made the participants to get involved in performing arts and what are the various factors that mould up the personality?. The objective of the presented study is to analyze the impact of performing arts in developing overall personality and the influence of selected socio-demographic variables. In the initial stage the principal investigator had discussions with Traditional Cultural Artists, Musical Instrument Players, Theatre Society Managers, Entertainers, Cultural Events Organizers, different artists, singers, stage performers, live performers, cultural ambassadors, fine arts club students, student office bearers of cultural clubs, cultural co-ordinators of various colleges and experts in the field of performing arts. The universe consists of 125 college students of fine arts affiliated to Bharathidasan University in Tirchirappalli District. The project has adopted Descriptive Research Design. Since the study is analytical and empirical in nature, it is based on both primary and secondary data. The project was administered with self-prepared questionnaire. The study result shows that there is a significant association between performing arts and overall personality of the students. The implication and conclusion has been discussed and way forwarded.
