| Abstract | ||
The study of population has gained much more importance because of increasing realisation that an understanding processes underlying demographic changes, the factors associated with them and their consequences. The Totos are a primitive Mogoloid isolated tribal group in the newly formed Alipurduar District and have been identified as one of the endangered tribes of India. They have very distinct socio-economic and cultural peculiarities that have acted as constraints to their expansion and survival. However, intervention from government and non-governmental organisation, the negative growth rate of the Toto population has been checked and is at present showing negligible increments. There are certain issues which are taken into consideration for the study. The distinctness of the Toto community has been measured from a geographical perspective and presented by the socio-demographic profile with a define foci on environment and habitat. Measures and recommendations in form of suggestion are possible when socio-economic variables are studied along with their demographic indicators like family size and population composition. |
