Abstract

In this research paper, I have thoroughly described about the topic “Role of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Towards a Casteless Society in West Bengal: A Critical Study.” This critical study examines the role of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in fostering a casteless society in West Bengal during the 16th century. He is a renowned saint, mystic, and leader of the Bhakti movement, challenged the prevailing caste system through his teachings of universal love and inclusivity. The study provides an overview of Chaitanya's life, teachings, and the historical context in which he worked, highlighting his impact on Bengal's culture and society. Through a detailed analysis of original sources, historical reports, and academic interpretations, the study explores the complexities and contradictions inherent in Chaitanya's efforts to dismantle caste barriers while navigating the hierarchical structures of his time. His teachings emphasized passionate devotion (bhakti) to Lord Krishna as the path to spiritual enlightenment, transcending caste distinctions. His inclusive approach to spirituality and social relations challenged orthodox beliefs and practices, sparking resistance from religious, social, and political quarters. Despite facing opposition, Chaitanya and his disciples promoted caste equality through inclusive community gatherings (sankirtan), egalitarian distribution of sanctified food (prasad), social outreach, literary contributions, and exemplary leadership. The study evaluates the impact of Chaitanya's movement on West Bengal society, highlighting the increase in participation of marginalized groups in religious activities, the promotion of social equality and integration, improvements in education and literacy rates, and the emergence of non-Brahmin leaders. It also examines the enduring relevance of Chaitanya's teachings in contemporary discussions on social justice and equality. Therefore, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu encountered significant challenges in his quest for a casteless society, including social resistance, religious opposition, cultural barriers, political resistance, and internal dissension within his own movement. Despite these obstacles, his legacy continues to inspire millions, serving as a beacon of hope for a more inclusive and equitable society.
