Abstract

Education is the base for the development of any nation. It is considered as the top priority for developing nation..School education is the major factor responsible for the growth in the education system. Student retention is the key component for assessing the education from different perspectives .Due to the addition of school age children every year the magnitude of the educational challenge has increased.. This paper highlights the alarming rate of school dropouts. An urgent action is required especially the current supply of education is barely meeting the demand..Globally, it is an incontestable fact that the progress of India is highly dependent on the education of their citizens. Education plays important role and has a cross cutting impact on all aspects of human life. It is a vital investment for human and economic development. The main purpose of this paper is to find out the causes of students drop out rates and their impact on Indian economy. This research find outs the reasons of dropouts in Punjab and more importantly comparative analysis of the causes of students dropouts globally. Parents‟ unwillingness of students, distance and lack of facilities, bad school environment and building. A survey was commissioned by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and was conducted by Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB) on “National Survey of Estimation of out-of-school children in age 6-13 in India” . It was pointed out in the study report that children within the rural areas drop out of school earlier than those in the urban areas.
