Abstract

Demographic characteristics of an area are important for planning and implementation of state policies. Population of the Koraiyar watershed is 4, 22,835 of which the male population accounts for (210635) 49.81 per cent and the female population is (212200) 50.per cent. Compared to male population the female population is slightly high. The population is high in the villages adjacent to the towns. Among the working class people about 32.4 per cent (62, 535) is primary workers, secondary 3.3 per cent (6349) and tertiary 64.3 per cent (1, 24, 193 persons). Rapid population has meant a decline in agricultural land and switch over to industrial, residential and commercial uses. The study area, Koraiyar watershed has noticed these phenomena and an attempt has been made in this paper to study the demographic characteristics of the watershed.
