Abstract

It is a known fact that no place in the world is free from crimes, however it is possible that the level of criminality may differ from one country to another country. Crime existed from times immemorial and changes its nature time to time. Thus prison system in India has exited from the earliest time. Our preacher describes about imprisonment of convicts in closed prison In BRAHASPATI and MANU. Chanakya in Arthashastra has conferred that the rulers in ancient India made frequent use of fortresses to lodge their prisoners. But object behind the imprisonment that Prisoner were expected to undergo the process of penance and remonstrance, And give them the opportunity of self-introspection that's why there was a common way to keep the Prisoners in solitary confinement. The purpose Behind the punishment during period of Hind and Hughal rule was to prevent offenders from repeating crime but Nowdays, It’s stain on prison system in India that the Prisoners suffers from ill-treated, tortured and inhuman treatment.
