Abstract

This research paper deals with the sound inventories of playschool children learning Hindi and English in the age group of 2:6(Years: Months) to 3:6 years. The main objective of this research is to observe the possible sounds produced by the children at various positions like initial, medial and final positions of the word. Research method: Data was collected from 20 children by Peabody picture vocabulary test and by prompting to repeat the word. A word list was prepared to test all the possible sounds at all the positions and accordingly the pictures of the objects were arranged. The responses were also recorded for checking the accuracy of the sounds later on. The help of the concerned teachers were also taken for the same. Informal information about the child’s performance was also gathered from the respective teachers. Like how active the child is in the class. How clear their articulation of speech is, etc. Results:  Most of the children had a clear articulation for most of the speech sounds. Certain aspirated sounds were missing from most of them. For few children voiced sounds were missing and sometimes some sounds were replaced by other sounds.
