Abstract

The works of GoswamiTulsidas in Indian literature and William Shakespeare in British literature are full of humanitarian ideas. From the writings of different texts, they try to avoid making people suffer and they help people who are suffering. So, their works act as preceptor for the human beings. Both the poets have sketched the human behaviour with great dexterity. In their works we find all types of human characters we encounter in this modern era. The present paper entitled "A Comparative Study of Tulasidas’s Vibhishana and Shakespeare’s Horatio in Eastern and Western Literature” talks of the different traits that the both characters of the two contemporary poets contain. Being the younger brother of the Demon-King and tyrannous emperor Ravana, Vibhishana hardly follows his elder brother’s principles and he sticks to his own generous ideas and owns the friendship of Ram. On the other hand, Horatio who is the bosom friend of Hamlet continues to cooperate with him in all adversities and preserves his sincerity towards him till the drama ends. In this way both the characters have many common features like fearlessness, bravery, balanced will, frankness etc.
