Inland Trade and Commerce During the Reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh

The reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1799-1839) marked a transformative period in Punjab's economic history, particularly in the development of inland trade and commerce. Known as the "Lion of Punjab," Ranjit Singh not only established a formidable empire stretching from the Khyber Pass to the Sutlej River but also created an environment that fostered unprecedented commercial growth and prosperity. Under his astute leadership, Punjab emerged as a major commercial hub, connecting various trade routes between Central Asia, Afghanistan, and the Indian subcontinent. Prior to Ranjit Singh's ascendancy, Punjab's trade and commerce had suffered considerably due to frequent invasions, political instability, and criminal activities that plagued the region. The Grand Trunk Road, a vital commercial artery, had become unsafe and was largely abandoned, forcing merchants to seek alternative routes through the Kangra hills.
