GIS-Based Watershed Management for Sustainable Water Resource Planning

Abstract
Sustainable water resource management has become a critical global priority due to increasing water scarcity, rapid urbanization, climate change, population growth, and land use transformations. Watershed management provides an integrated framework for conserving soil, water, vegetation, and other natural resources while ensuring the long-term sustainability of freshwater ecosystems. In recent years, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as powerful decision-support tools for watershed assessment, spatial analysis, hydrological modelling, and resource planning. This study explores the application of GIS-based watershed management for sustainable water resource planning by integrating spatial datasets, digital elevation models (DEMs), land use/land cover (LULC) maps, soil characteristics, rainfall patterns, drainage networks, and hydrological parameters. The study concludes that integrating geospatial technologies with participatory watershed management and policy-driven conservation strategies can significantly strengthen water security and promote sustainable water resource planning under changing environmental and climatic conditions.
