Abstract

In the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent lies the Thar Desert, a harsh and arid environment boasting a unique biodiversity that has remarkably adapted to its challenging conditions. Within this unforgiving landscape emerges a traditional system known as "Oran," a time-honored conservation practice that has played a crucial role in preserving the Thar Desert's biodiversity. Oran, also called "sacred groves" or "community conserved areas," involves setting aside specific lands for the sustainable protection of natural resources, including plants and animals. Rooted in cultural and spiritual beliefs, these groves are considered sacred, entrusted to the care of local communities who see them as the dwelling places of deities or spirits.

This study delves into the characteristics and significance of Oran in the Thar Desert, shedding light on its vital role in conserving biodiversity. These sacred groves serve as havens for diverse plant species, including medicinal herbs and trees, and provide critical habitats for various animal species, such as birds, reptiles, and small mammals. Moreover, Orans aid in water conservation and combat desertification by preserving soil integrity through the vegetation's root systems. Despite its historical success, the traditional Oran system faces modern challenges, such as urbanization, the decline of traditional knowledge, and the impacts of climate change. To ensure its continued effectiveness, active involvement of local communities, legal recognition, and protection, as well as raising awareness about its ecological importance, are necessary. Combining traditional practices with modern conservation strategies is also crucial.

This research underscores Oran's significance as a sustainable model for biodiversity conservation in arid regions and advocates for further initiatives and studies to preserve and uphold this revered tradition not only in the Thar Desert but also in other similar areas worldwide.
