Commercial acceptability of Dark Tourism in India

Abstract

“One sole country under the sun that is endowed with an imperishable interest for alien prince and alien peasant, for lettered and ignorant, wise and fool, rich and poor, bond and free, the one land that all men desire to see, and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of all the rest of the world combined” these words of Mark Twin aptly portray India as the land of rich heritage and inimitable sites. Sanskrit orientation of „अतिथिदेवो भव:‟ (consider the guest as god) to a marketing slogan „Incredible India‟ the country has promote tourism in India. Since the Second Five Year Plan till date all initiatives have been taken to boost this sector. And the initiatives have favourably resulted in the way that India has jumped 12 places to 40th rank globally in travel and tourism competitiveness list by World Economic Forum also jumped 16 places to 41st rank in the revised World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) rankings. This has happened just because 'India is a country of all seasons and all reasons'. All these credentials are adequate to define the prominence of tourism across the globe. But when it comes to the Dark Tourism Sites, are the standings and promotional endeavours remaining at par? A tourism that involves travelling to places associated with death and suffering. The destinations linked to untimely or violent deaths, the spots generally have political or historical significance. Notorious Jallianwala Bagh site; Bhopal Gas Leak Industrial disasters; 2004‟s badly beaten Tsunami site few of the Dark Tourist places. This article will speak about the commercial acceptability, popularity among the people of making pilgrimages to sites of devastating massacres and macabre sites in India..
