| Abstract | ||
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most common chronic disorder considered an important public health problem. It is a metabolic disorder of the endocrine system and affecting nearly 10% of population all over the world also the number of those affected is increasing day to day. It is caused by the deficiency or ineffective production of insulin by pancreas which results in increase or decrease in concentrations of glucose in the blood. A lot of chemical agents are available to manage and to treat hyperglycemic patients, but entire revitalization from diabetes has not been accounted up to this date. The recent oral hypoglycemic agents generate unwanted consequences. Alternative to these synthetic agents, many herbal plants with hypoglycemic properties are known from across the world. This review focuses on diabetes mellitus and role of plants used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. |
