Abstract

The aim of present study was to establish standardization parameters of Beta vulgaris L. leaves since less reports are available on this plant. Macro and microscopical studies, physico-chemical parameters, preliminary phytochemical screening, quantitative estimation of total phenolic content, flavonoid content, tannin content, total saponin, alkaloid content were performed on leaves of the plant. The qualitative and quantitative studies on n- hexane, 70% ethanol and n-butanol extracts of leaves revealed the presence of various phytoconstituents viz. carbohydrates, alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, sterols, phenolic and tannins compounds. Elemental analysis showed heavy metals like mercury, arsenic, calcium and cadmium etc. were within limits. These studies would help to establish quality standards, purity and sample identification of Beta vulgaris L. leaves.
