Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the incidence of availability of social security benefits among regular and casual salaried workers both in the public sectors as well as private sectors in Indian economy. Along with that, this paper also examines the determining factors by using logistic regression model, which play significant roles behind the availability of social security benefits among regular and casual salaried workers. This paper uses 61st (2004-05) and 68th (2011-12) round National Sample Survey data on Employment and Unemployment to estimate the comparative analysis in the availability of social security benefits among regular and casual salaried workers for these two years. As social security benefit is one of the most important indicators of Informalisation of employment in Indian economy. The result shows that approximately 50 percentages of regular salaried workers and 90 percent of casual salaried workers are deprived of any social security benefits. Apart from that, we have used logistic regression model to estimate the determinants of availability of social security benefits in probabilistic terms. The results of the econometric analysis is that casual workers in the public sector are most deprived class of worker in both the rural and urban area. Therefore, a clear picture of inequality is visible in India labour market. Therefore, the Policy level intervention should focus on proper amendment of labour laws and implementation of various schemes such as Atal Pension Yojana and National Pension Schemes not only at the central level but also at the state level in India.
