Abstract

Women empowerment means marginalizing power in women and girls so that they can play a significant role in the society. Women Empowerment makes women participate actively in society and help in making them independent. Women empowerment is a debatable subject. Many a time they were treated as slave. They were not given equal status as men. From early twenty century (national movement) their statuses have been changed slowly and gradually. For women empowerment in India, the Self Help Groups (SHG's) played a major role. The Self Help Groups made women independent and allowed to actively take part in social activities. Though it is applicable to men in our country, but it has been more successful only among women and they can start economic activities through SHG movement. Empowerment is an active multidimensional process to enable women to realize their identity and power in all spheres of life. This paper analyses about the women empowerment in India and how they're empowered through Self Help Groups in India.
