A Demographic Study of personal and psychological Facilitators and Barriers to Entrepreneurial Start-ups of India

Abstract

Entrepreneurship is believed to be an effective strategy in handling the issue of employability as it is synonymous with self-employment. Understanding of the factors that predict entrepreneurial start-ups intention and success which scholars have studied widely from overseas and still it remains question in local setting, particularly in India. This study is an attempt to identify and measure personal and psychological factors which may take the form of either facilitators or barriers with demography. Design/methodology/approach: The primary focus of the present study here is to identify different personal and psychological factors which may act as facilitators or barriers.The data for the study is collected by random sampling method from 200 start-ups who are listed in DICs and different institutes, through a well-structured questionnaire. Since Respondents are asked to rank the elements, therefore, Charles Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient was used to analyze the data. Findings: The extent of female business visionaries is only 15% which demonstrates that entrepreneurship isn't top vocation decision for female business visionaries and age lies between 31-40 years which is considered an age of maturity, on average the sample consists of individual who are mature enough to do business. The study deals with two factors. “Ability to develop opportunity” by both males and females as well as from all age groups means that with respect to gender as well as age this item act as strong facilitator and “Lack of skills” by both the gender perceived serious barrier. While Lack of skills is perceived as barrier by lower age startups as the age increases it becomes strong barrier.
